Now here’s a summer album. With Confidence are from Australia, love a chorus and aren’t afraid to show either of those things. The four-piece’s debut effort is full to bursting with pure pop-punk joy, with an emphasis on the pop. Seemingly endless hooks run through the likes of ‘Voldemort’, while lead single ‘We’ll Be Okay’ oozes early-’00s radio rock charm.
Comparisons to friends 5 Seconds Of Summer will be plentiful and (at least partially) justified, but these four gents go harder than their fellow countrymen through the frantic screams on ‘Keys’ and sugary, blown-out pop-rock of ‘Higher’. Better still – it’s fun.
With ‘Better Weather’, this band slot seamlessly into the Warped Tour scene and have more than enough oomph to suggest they have what it takes to follow in the footsteps of Hopeless Records labelmates and big boys like All Time Low and Yellowcard.
Whether they’re gazing skywards on outsider anthem ‘Archers’ or piano-led ballad ‘Long Night’, it’s a remarkably accomplished take on modern pop-rock. Once you add almost five-minute-long closer ‘Waterfall’ into the equation, this debut is an innocent, polished, perfect start to what – on this evidence at least – is shaping up to be a big career.
