Just when you think you’ve worked out The Tidal Sleep’s new release, the self-styled ‘post-everything’ noiseniks change things up again.
Yes, on the whole there’s a violent beauty to each of these 11 songs, but they’re full of surprises. ‘Spills’, for example, is a heady rush of impassioned desperation which veers from spoken word to throat-tearing screaming to soothing singing, before burning up in an incandescent ball of rage – all in just over two-and-a-half minutes.
Elsewhere, ‘Sogas’ is as aggressive as it is lush and ‘Collapses’ is a doom-laden, slow-motion death march. It all makes for an exhaustingly brilliant listen.
