Many adjectives will be used to describe this debut album from Oregon post-metal sluggers Rye Wolves, but we wager that ‘immense’ will rear its head almost every time. Lovers of early Isis should recognise the oceanic intent. Yet for all that has come since, Rye Wolves’ crashing waves of riffs remain as fresh as a tsunami-powered blast of sea air. Complex as they are crushingly heavy, the momentum has the urgency that many contemporaries lack; the lulls outdo most in textured dexterity. ‘Millions Of Gallons Of Water’ is a less nautically-themed song title as spot-on summation, and that a mere trio constructed a record this mighty confirms Rye Wolves a force to be reckoned with.
