New Years Day - Epidemic
New Years Day: a new hope for theatrical rock?
It’s not that New Years Day have ideas above their station, it’s just that up to now they’ve always failed to reach their potential. Following on from last year’s full-length ‘Victim To Villain’, this theatrical clutch of songs is great, but only in patches. The crunch of ‘Other Side’ descends into a rangy, soaring chorus, but the lyrics often tend towards the tacky side of things (“You’ll always be a joker to me, but I’m not laughing any more”). While vocalist Ash Costello is finest at her most wound up on standout ‘Defame Me’, she can’t save other, less bombastic sections of this EP getting lost in their own pomposity.
