Lock yourself in a dark room, far away from distractions, and plug in headphones that block out all extraneous noise

To truly appreciate Her Name Is Calla you need to lock yourself in a dark room, far away from distractions, and plug in headphones that block out all extraneous noise. Got time for that? This sophomore album follows similar patterns to the band’s debut, ‘The Heritage’, with minimalist, subtle soundscapes coming to life slowly and uncertainly – emerging into the light, blinking. When they erupt, as on ‘Pour More Oil’ and ‘Condor And Rover’, Calla sound like a folkier, chamber version of Explosions In The Sky, and it’s impressive. But the build-up, while pretty, requires far too much patience to keep you gripped.
