"A fine soundtrack to the vanquishing of your inner demons."
Milton Keynes quintet Heart Of A Coward sometimes find themselves filed under djent / progressive metal, but the vast majority of their second album ‘Severance’ is powered by a punishing death / groove metal hybrid, with bursts of seriously technical guitar work at every turn. Unsurprisingly, the likes of ‘Prey’, ‘Distance’ and ‘Mirrors’ sound pretty fucking huge, helped in no small part by frontman Jamie Graham’s ability to seamlessly switch between powerful melodic singing and throat-shredding roars. These guys may not be pushing the envelope, but ‘Severance’ is a fine reminder that quality extreme metal can be simultaneously anthemic and brutal. A fine soundtrack to the vanquishing of your inner demons.
