With pop-punk enjoying something of a revival as of late, Fireworks are repeatedly cited as genre champions by the diehards. ‘Gospel’ won’t do a great deal to change that, but in the same breath it lacks a certain bite to propel them to the next level. This is a good record – but by no means is it great. ‘Oh Why Can’t We Start Old And Get Younger?’ proves to be the album’s simmering gem, but compared to their 09 debut, the whole affair is lacking in instant hits. Perseverance with ‘Gospel’ does bring its rewards, however – don’t dismiss this by any means, but don’t expect to have your mind blown either.
