Ephel Duath were always tapped, but is writing an album based around the events witnessed from a dog’s point of view actually easier to figure out than their previous releases? ‘Gift’ begins like Clutch, ‘Nina’ delights in the shimmering odd-rock of Tomahawk, ‘Silent Door’ shows TDEP elements and ‘Promenade’ weaves half-flat noises around the tipsy guitar and ebbing drums. Not as obviously zany as they once were, it’s musically developed like Dillinger, that thin façade of normality hiding some odd shapes. Vocalist Luciano George Lorusso has quit the band and been replaced by professional poker player – Guillermo Gonzalez – making this a gamble, but a fantastic record regardless.
