"It's a dense record, with an ambitious sonic palate..."
It’s been ages since we heard anything from the fabulous Xcerts but frontman Murray Macleod has clearly not been resting on his laurels. Along with songwriter Paul Steel, the pair have crafted this debut Cold Crows Dead record that blends the grungy emo pop of Macleod’s day job with woozy psychedelia and nattering electronica. Like a Thom Yorke-fronted Brand New playing Beatles songs, the likes of ‘Deadheads’ and ‘Screaming At Shadows’ flicker between angular rock and melodic ’60s pop with supreme skill and confidence. It’s a dense record with an ambitious sonic palate, but its many glistening melodies allow you to sink right in.
