Gav Lloyd got weird with Cane Hill at Download Festival on Saturday. Here's what he found out.
PEOPLE STILL REALLY LOVE NU METAL In recent years nu metal has become significantly less frowned upon and more and more bands have been drawing influence from those late '90s / early '00s bands. Cane Hill are one of the most unashamedly new nu metal bands around, and people are clearly happy with this sonic resurrection - reacting with messy mosh pits from the off.
THEY'RE A BUNCH OF WEIRD DUDES (IN A GOOD WAY) There's something undeniably unhinged about frontman Elijah Witt's performance. Far from a disingenuous throwback to an era when the freaks ruled the rock roost, he's the focal point for those who exist out of the status quo and could only make music like this.
WITT IS A CHEEKY CHAP AS WELL After implying that us Brits are a bit prudish (we think you'll find that's an unfair stereotype and we can be quite the naughty bunch when we want to be, tbh), Witt used his between-song banter time to encourage the crowd to take drugs and have sex. In a world where rock stars can be a bit too sweet and nice, it's refreshing to see a frontman who clearly doesn't give a fuck.
P.S. Don't take drugs, though. That's bad.
WE'LL BE SEEING A LOT MORE OF THEM While the tent may not be at bursting point, they go down a storm with those who are here. Some people may be unfamiliar with them at the moment, but the more people they reach, the more people will be captivated. Cane Hill are bringing things to the rock scene that have been sorely lacking for a while and it's not hard to picture these guys doing this on Download's main stage in the not-too-distant future.
