Black Stone Cherry - Between The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea Cover

Rollocking good-time tunes that are easy on the ear...

Easy on the ear, Lynyrd Skynyrd-infused man rock? Anyone? Ohhh, go on then. Ultimately, all the cynicism in the world at their lack of originality cannot counteract the fact that when BSC’s fuzzed blues-rock really clicks on this record (combined with Chris Robertson’s emotive, gravely voice) lovers of good grooves will grin like idiots. Take single ‘White Trash Millionaire’ for instance, and the shamelessly nostalgic, sunny ‘Like I Roll’ – this writer cannot help but sway with self-indulgent glee to their rollicking good-time tones. But alas, it does slide into muddy, stodge-rock territory on slower numbers, playing the moodily reflective, ‘worn-by-experience’ card a little too weightily. Shame.
