While his day job in Lucero just achieved a promotion of sorts (the band have reportedly just signed to Universal Records), Ben Nichols has been showcasing his more emotive side alongside Chuck Ragan, Tom Gabel and our very own Frank Turner on the Stateside Revival tour. ‘Revival’ is a word that comes to mind frequently throughout the course of this wholesome mini-album, ‘The Kid’ and ‘Chambers’ in particular being extremely reminiscent of a ‘Devils & Dust’-era Bruce Springsteen. Nichols clearly comprehends the importance of simplicity in great songwriting, mixing his straight-up Americana with a hefty dose of Irish folk (‘Davy Brown’), a genre that also never got ahead of itself. Raise a whiskey, for this music warms the soul.
