What’s most compelling about Baroness’ follow-up to the wildly popular ‘Red Album’ is how they’ve refused to stay still. They’re still the same sweaty dudes from America’s humidity capital (Savannah, Georgia) cracking off melodic, punky sludge, but their range of dynamics has grown immensely. ‘A Horse Called Golgotha’ and ‘Jake Leg’ weave flowing layers and grandiose melodies amid delightful power chord progressions and Thin Lizzy / Mastodon-ish guitar wails. John Baizley’s vocals are more exploratory, super-fuzzed out acid rock leads detonate ‘The Sweetest Curse’, orchestral guitars accompany the down home ‘Blackpowder Orchard’ and Alan Blickle’s tribal shuffling creates sonic dimensions making everything about ‘Blue Album’ sound larger-than-life.
