We had a chat with Trash Boat's Tobi Duncan earlier this year, from the studio. Here's a taster of what he told us about the upcoming 'Crown Shyness':
HOW DID YOU INITIALLY GO ABOUT APPROACHING THE FOLLOW UP TO 'NOTHING I WRITE YOU WILL CHANGE WHAT YOU'VE BEEN THROUGH', A RECORD THAT WAS NOTICEABLY SO EMOTIONALLY DRAINING? "In terms of the last album, the way that I write is very introspective. I enjoy being very heavily self-reflective on the things that are happening around me and the interactions and relationships that I have with people. I enjoy putting a microscope on them and trying to figure them out. It tends to come out in song pretty well and makes for a very engaging and emotional performance as well as great songs. So I wanted to just continue doing that."
WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN TRYING TO DELVE INTO THEMATICALLY WITH THIS ALBUM? "I’m not sure how much I can discuss about the album title and the actual themes at this time. There is a title and there is a solid basis for metaphors though. I could say that it is a continuation of a lyrical style of the previous album. So for example, it’s about the things that have happened to me over the last 18 months. Recently my dog, who I have had since I was 11, has become very old and very ill, and that struck a chord with me. So I decided to write a song about that. Anything that has struck a chord in my life, I think I can create something that not only gives me cathartic relief when I perform but also something that other people can relate to and get some sort of relief from, and something that they can get lost in and not think too hard. I really want to go into what it all means but I might get in trouble. I will be able to have that conversation very soon though."
