Inside Set It Off's cover feature, frontman Cody Carson talks about how he uses people's negativity to fuel the band forward.
Before this album came out, could you have ever believed you’d be in this position now? The band’s the biggest it’s ever been, but pre-‘Midnight’, a lot of people were writing you off...
Says Cody: “Honestly, let people write us off. That’s fuel. I thrive off of that shit. That’s what’s exciting, too - through this album coming out and this resurgence that has happened, both our fanbase and ourselves feel like we’re putting everyone on notice. We’re just getting started. If this could happen for us on this album, this far into our career? That means that the door has just been kicked down. I can’t wait to come back and strike hard again with the new album that we’re writing, because I’ve got a lot to say.”
Do you think the band would have survived at all if it weren’t for your fans rallying behind you after losing your label and your management at once?
“It’s an incredible thing. We don’t exist without our fans, and I don’t want to exist without them! Knowing that we have this connection, and that we can go out and play songs for people who we have that connection with, that’s what this is all about. They sing every lyric back to us with such passion, you can just feel it. In terms of before ‘Midnight’ though, if we didn’t have that connection and that love for each other, I don’t see anyone being able to go through what we’ve been through, and come back.”
