With his new album 'Tickets To My Downfall', Machine Gun Kelly has attempted to blur the lines between modern hip-hop and pop-punk in a way that nobody else has done before.
The result is a record that is set to introduce a whole new audience to a sound they haven't heard before.
In our recent Video Call, we asked Colson whether 'Tickets To My Downfall' was an indication of a sound he will inhabiting as we move forwards past this release...
"I think for the foreseeable future is a good way to put it. I think it would be an injustice to cut off a whole segment of my career. The struggle right now is, ‘Can somebody for the first time in musical history do two genres at the exact same time?’"
He then went on to comment about how a track such as 'My Ex's Best Friend', featuring blackbear, which is a pretty spot-on example of the two sides of his sound coming together in unity...
"That song went through so many phases. That was the one song that I had done a year ago prior to meeting Travis. It was a whole different tempo. It was a whole different track when we brought it to Travis [Barker]. But the lyrics fit so well with the elements that ‘Tickets To My Downfall’ is talking about. These are really niche situations that relate to masses."
He then added this...
"People have been making great rock music and pop punk music even throughout this dead period of rock and roll and punk pop. But there was a ceiling put on that because of hip-hop culture rising so much and that being what was streaming the most. None of these people figured out the formula to snag this audience and get those streaming numbers. You don’t look at people, unless it’s blink-182 or The Killers, and see 100 million streams on a pop-punk song. We found that formula with this album where these kids are going to listen to this type of music even if they don’t know that they like this music. We’re all speaking the same language."
