Inside her cover feature, Lights discussed the reasons behind wanting to self-produce her upcoming acoustic album - and a lot of it hinges around wanting to hilight the capabilities of women behind the scenes of the music industry.
“I finished everything on my own in my home studio, and I was proud of that,” she shared. “I don’t think I would have had the guts to do it if it weren’t for everything I’ve learned about myself through doing ‘Skin & Earth’. There’s this aspect of being a female artist where you’re never sure of what you can do, or what you can finish, because most of what you hear isn’t produced by women. Growing up it would have been nice to have gone, ‘Yeah, 10 per cent of my favourite songs were produced by women, I can do that’. But they were so few and far between that I never really pursued getting really good at production. In the back of your mind, there’s a voice that says, ‘98 per cent of them are men, what’s the point?’ But now I’ve achieved this whole project I’m like, ‘I can do anything, we can do anything’."
Lights then added "It’s inspiring to see other women in the game, and there needs to be more of that. Call for women to work on your projects, give them opportunities, let’s highlight them so other people can see it and go ‘I can do that too’.”
Genuinely powerful stuff.
