Jenna opens up...

Tonight Alive
frontwoman Jenna McDougall and guitarist Jake Hardy recently appeared on the Billboard #AlternativeFacts Podcast.

Here are the highlights...

JENNA TALKS IMAGE PRESSURE

"I went to a private girls school, I definitely felt like a black sheep in every situation in my life.

"I feel like a lot of the time I was either explaining myself or just feeling misunderstood and a lot of that has fuelled our music.

"I've always worn more masculine clothes and a lot of people have really challenged me on that.

"Through my childhood I always had my mum saying, 'Why can't you dress more like a girl? And I always felt like the friend who wasn't the pretty one.

"And then going through the whole major label thing, they wanted me to be conventionally beautiful and just put forward an image that was more accessible and digestible to people.

"Whenever I wanted to challenge people with my image, it was always thrown back in my face."

BEING FRIENDS WITH PVRIS AND WORKING WITH LYNN GUNN

"We were both supporting Mayday Parade across America and Canada... We were both the support bands on that tour and had hardly any responsibility... we would watch American Horror Story every week on our bandwagon. It felt like school camp!

"It was one of their earliest tours, they hadn't even put their first record out... we've stayed in touch ever since.

"We've always wanted to collaborate and this was the first chance we got. 'Disappear' came together in half a day."

"Collectively, we were like, 'Let's not make this sound like Tonight Alive, let's not make it sound like PVRIS'. Let's just mess around and see what we get. We ended up writing a song that we wanted to be the soundtrack to a road trip, a getaway song."

COLLABORATING WITH SLIPKNOT FRONTMAN COREY TAYLOR AND FINDING OUT HE'S A TONIGHT ALIVE FAN

"He started following me on Twitter and I was tripping out! I messaged him and said, 'I respect you and your work' and he said likewise and I was like, 'Get the hell out!'"

"That was in 2015 so when we finished 'Underworld', I reached out to him for the first time in all those years... he wrote back saying, 'I'd love to sing on the record'. He just made it so easy, he was kind and generous with his time...

"When we saw each other in Sydney, I said, 'I don't know why you accepted the offer' and he said, 'Because I'm a fan'. That just blew my mind."

'UNDERWORLD' SHARES A SPECIAL CONNECTION WITH EVANESCENCE

"David Hodges is a great friend of ours. He recorded the piano on 'Looking For Heaven'. He was actually the songwriter and pianist on the first Evanescence record ['Fallen'], he did 'Bring Me To Life' and 'My Immortal'!"

JENNA REVEALED HER FAVE SLIPKNOT SONG...

"My favourite Slipknot song is 'Vermillion Pt. 2'. I like the heavy stuff but I love that song, it's so tender.. it's why I fell in love with Corey Taylor's voice."

AND SHE LOVES AVRIL LAVIGNE...

"I frickin' love Avril, she was a huge idol for me, just going to throw that in there!"

'Underworld' is out now via Hopeless.

Here's the video for 'Temple' too...
