Making music isn't just a job to Frank - it's so inherently part of who he is, as he explains:
People tour and make records for all sorts of reasons, and for many of them it’s become the job that keeps them afloat. Materially, they kind of have to. But you’re in a position where you’re relatively secure, and you don’t have to do these things. So what’s ultimately driving you to keep doing them at this point, and take creative risks as part of that?
Says Frank: “There are certain things that hold true, you know? As a kid, I just wanted to play. And I still love to play, truly. I really do. There’s nothing like playing a show, too. I could go downstairs and play, but a show is different. There’s no other feeling like it, it’s a high that you’ll chase forever when it goes right. And when it goes bad? Oh my god, I would rather have someone peel the skin off my face with me still awake. When it’s bad, it’s terrible! But, when it is good, it’s the best experience. We’re all still chasing that. I’ll never forget my first show, right? I was so scared to get up there, just to do it. I was terrified. And then you get up there, and the song goes well, and you don’t want to get offstage. That high is unlike anything else. And so, there’s still that, I still get that. But with that being said, I’m not going to go out there and suffer to do it. It has to feel good. And I think that’s how you get the great shows and the great tours, from really feeling good about the thing you’re doing, about the people you’re playing with, about the songs you’re playing. If the songs suck and you hate the people on the stage, go home. You know? Because even those good shows are not going to be that good!”
