We’ve Heard YUNGBLUD’s New Song ‘fleabag’, And This Is What It Sounds Like

Ahead of it dropping tomorrow (August 19), we’ve had the privilege of hearing YUNGBLUD’s new single early. And we think you’re going to absolutely love it.

There’s always a huge buzz when it comes time for YUNGBLUD to release a new track. A sense of celebration and ceremony in both the build-up and execution. Though where for the last 18 months, he has had to excite the Black Hearts Club for new music from a distance and through a screen, when it comes to ‘Fleabag’, he’s been able to tease whilst stood on a stage and in front of the crowd.

That unrestrained energy and excitement for being back to where he belongs has made the song’s release countdown feel all the more special. And the chorus is surely already burrowed into your head, what with the massive sing-alongs that Dom has conducted both inside and outside of venues over the past week or so.

But now we have the entire thing. And it’s a bit of a banger.

Serving as the first piece of new music since his second album, ‘Weird!’ dropped late last year, ‘Fleabag’ picks things back up at the rough and raucous side of the YB playbook. Kicking off with a loose and lairy riff as Dom croons, “I wanna turn back time / I wanna fix the way I was designed” before a deafening bassline fills the gaps, it’s clear there’s a significant grunge influence at play here. Slowly building and deeply self-deprecating, the track could have been plucked straight from the early ’90s, yet it still manages to feel thoroughly modern.

Though where the verses feel downtrodden and derelict, a lot of the immediate energy of the song has been injected into that earworm of a chorus, where Dom exclaims that he may be a fleabag that nobody loves.

Still, and he makes this clear, he’s certainly not your monkey or your puppet. In many ways, it feels like Dom is saying that he knows who he is, both good and bad, but that doesn’t mean anyone can try and change him. This is his life to live and learn from, and there’s nothing you can do to stop that.

That sentiment is further solidified, in the second verse, where he squeals, “No matter what I do / You twist my words and get confused” before sighing about feeling like he is fading. When every move he makes is examined, ridiculed and debated, this is a reminder that behind everything that YUNGBLUD does, there’s someone just trying to do what they think is best for the people around them.

Finishing up with a ripping guitar solo and one more huge sing-along of that chorus, ‘Fleabag’ is done, and it’s time to put it on repeat. Though this is the first step into a post-‘Weird!’ era, it is as quintessential YUNGBLUD as it gets.

Thoughtful, fierce and flowing with a sneering attitude, this is a big rock and roll anthem for all those who know who they are and are proud of it.

And we can’t wait to see where it is leading.
