Waterparks are heading back to the UK, and Awsten is delighted.
God's Favourite Boyband™ Waterparks are making a return to the UK next year on the Slam Dunk 2019 line-up, announced earlier this morning.
We had a chat to the dynamic frontman (and Rock Sound columnist) Awsten Knight about his excitement to be heading back across the Atlantic to play for UK fans again.
SLAM DUNK 2019! ARE YOU EXCITED? SLAM DUNK FEELS LIKE THE KIND OF FESTIVAL THAT PEOPLE GENUINELY LOOK FORWARD TO PLAYING.
Says Awsten: "It really is- this is a really good one and I’m really excited. Because in 2016 we played a side stage. Then last year it was a decent sized thing, it was definitely a step up- and this year it’s even higher. I remember last year having a really weird day and then the show was fucking incredible. I fucking love playing in the UK."
WHAT DO YOU REMEMBER MOST ABOUT LAST YEAR’S SLAM DUNK?
"So there are three dates, I’m trying to remember… There was one, and it was so sick… it was either the first or second one- I just remember going out there. I always know the UK crowd is gonna be good and I don’t wanna jinx it, but every time we go out on stage everything is just constant crowdsurfing and is just ridiculous in certain spots.
"Shows are I think 95% determined by the crowd for me. Because when we play it’s like yeah we’re playing a song and it’s consistent, but when we have an insane crowd that’s when I come off stage and I’m like ‘that was so fucking cool’. But if they were a bummer and I played totally fine, I’d be like ‘that show sucked’. But the UK has never let me down in that way."
DO YOU REMEMBER WHAT HAPPENED LAST YEAR WITH THE BLINDFOLD?
"Oh yeah, I forgot about that- I did do that. I think I had told someone that I would do something blindfolded if they brought a blindfold. And they did, so I was like 'oh shit, okay'."
THIS WILL BE THE THIRD TIME YOU’VE PLAYED SLAM DUNK, SO YOU’RE EDGING TOWARD VETERAN STATUS. RIGHTLY OR WRONGLY PEOPLE SEEM TO CONSIDER YOU A ‘NEW’ BAND- HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THAT?
"Yeah the thing is that I’m not mad if people want to consider us a new band- it sucks if they want to use that as a way of discrediting and saying we’re an overnight thing because obviously it wasn’t. But over the last- it’ll have been three years when we come back, which is fucking crazy, it would be a different story if we were playing the same stages or the same time slots and everything. But seeing the growth every time is like ‘okay cool thats why this is still happening’.
"We’ve got certain tour offers or festival offers where they’ve tried to give us the same thing we had a year before- and we’re like ‘what are you talking about? No.’ and then they’re like ‘okay here’ and we’re like ‘okay that makes sense’.
"The thing is with being in a band is that it’s all about the decisions you make and the looks that you take. So let’s say Warped Tour tried to give you the exact same stage for the same money back when you basically had toured once and you had no albums, and then you do all this cool and crazy shit and they’re like ‘you’re worth the exact same’ it’s like- we’re not."
IT MUST BE COOL TO BE IN A PLACE WHERE YOU CAN CHOOSE TO TAKE WHICHEVER OPPORTUNITIES ARE RIGHT FOR YOU RIGHT NOW.
"Exactly because it really matters- you have to show people what your look is. Because like, if we were to take every single pop-punk offer we got, we’d just be immediately fucking lumped in."
YOU’D BE ON ANY POP-PUNK TOUR RIGHT NOW...
"Exactly, yeah. And again, no shade to them, I like the bands, but it’s just not what we’re trying to do. When we were picking openers for the ‘Entertainment’ Tour that we’re about to leave on in a few weeks, I passed on so many people because that’s just not a cool look. That’s not cool. But then I was like ‘you know what? Let’s try iDKHOW.’ Because they’re a fucking cool band. People like them. They’re unique. Same with Super Whatevr- they’re a cool band. And then just bringing out rapper friends that we like- we just added my friend De’wayne to the tour. He’s from Houston and he’s also on MDDN, and I saw him play and I was like ‘fuck he’s so cool, we’re gonna bring him’."
