Though small in stature and humble in surroundings, every year Upcote Farm, just outside of Cheltenham, plays host to one of the most wonderful celebrations of music, art and community you will ever stumble upon.
Born out of an idea back in 2007, 2000 Trees is now an essential pilgrimage on the summer festival calendar. And every year, it manages to get more and more incredible.
The main thing that Trees excels at is showing off how unbelievably blessed we are to have music of different shapes and sizes available to us. It brings together new and old, hard and soft, undiscovered and under-appreciated and shows how they can exist in perfect harmony. No pretence, no bullshit, no ego in sight.
And that love of variety that the bands offer up is also represented by the crowd that finds their way there yearly. Open to anything. Up for taking a chance on a band they haven't heard of and, in many cases, walking away with a new favourite to check out once they've showered and caught up on sleep back in the real world. Passionate. Driven. Proud.
More than anything, 2000trees is a festival that makes you again believe in the power of music. Every time you approach a stage, you know something special will take place on it. You are never more than a few steps away from a set, a song, or a moment that will remind you why you love all of this so profoundly, emphatically, and unapologetically. Leaving the site after a weekend of pure audio bliss, you feel inspired. You feel hopeful. You feel utterly infatuated with discovering music the same way as when you first pressed play on your first album in whatever year that may have been.
In a time when rock music is still given the run-around so often and the tedious question of, 'Is the genre dead?' gets asked way more than it ever should, festivals like 2000trees remind you to keep the faith. Other people feel the same as you and want to share their passion with you as much as you do with them. You just have to find them, and they are most likely here.
You know when you're screaming along to your favourite band, tears streaming down your face as the emotion of it all is getting too much, and a hand clasps your shoulder, brings you in close, and you realise it's a complete stranger coming to join you in the ecstasy? That is what Trees feels like.
All. Weekend. Long.
Life is a beautiful tapestry of experiences and interactions. Throughout our time on this planet, we will have millions upon millions of both, but there are very few that truly stick with us. Those times help define who we are and who we want to be. It's hard to find just one of those moments, let alone three whole days' worth. Yet, that's precisely what makes 2000trees so priceless and so important.
We should cherish it, forever and always.
2000trees will be taking place between July 7-9 at Upcote Farm in Cheltenham. Tickets are available from right HERE
