Like A Storm's Matt Brooks takes us behind the barrier on their recent Euro tour with BVB.
BLACK VEIL BONDING
We had some epic nights with the BVB guys where we did a lot of 'bonding'… which is musician-speak for drinking. After the last show of the tour, we stayed up all night with Ashley & CC at a dirty Helsinki rock club, being plied with whiskey and some mysterious Finnish liquor. It felt like the perfect end to an amazing tour, until we all had to get up at 5am to catch our flights home. Nothing creates friendships like a shared hangover.
A LIKE A STORM / FEARLESS VAMPIRE KILLERS SUPERGROUP IS BORN
One of my favorite moments of the whole tour was when, inspired by a few European beers and a great night of rock n’ roll, we formed an impromptu nine-person supergroup with the Fearless Vampire Killers and walked around backstage singing the pub anthem Tubthumping' at the top of our lungs. Did it make any sense? No… but in that moment, we truly believed that they were never gonna keep us down.
It was our first time in Europe, and we were absolutely blown away! Not only were the crowds massive, they were the loudest and most enthusiastic fans I have ever seen in my life. Some kids were even pitching tents outside the venue the night before to get a front-row spot! These same kids would start screaming the moment we walked out onstage, and wouldn’t stop until Black Veil Brides played their last chord.
MIDNIGHT SNACK vs THE LANGUAGE BARRIER
Ordering three Big Mac meals in the middle of the night is just part of life on the road - assuming that you can communicate with the drive-in staff. All the emphatic hand gestures and half-speed English in the world couldn’t get us fed in Warsaw, Poland. Thankfully, Siri was there to save us… We ended up having to google the word “three” in Polish and use the “say it” function on our iPhone so we could get more than one meal!
During our travels, we got to see some incredible sights - including the Eiffel Tower, the Swedish Royal Palace, and more. One sunny morning in Germany, we decided to walk all the way up to the top of the colossal Cologne Cathedral. After climbing over 1000 feet of medieval staircases, I was absolutely exhausted. But the show must go on! So that night, during our set, I had no choice but to go into “Fat Elvis” mode - it’s all the same rock n’ roll moves, just with about one-fifth the conviction.
Being a huge fan of both vikings and volcanoes, I was really excited to set foot in Iceland. We ventured outside and met face-to-face with Reykjavik’s epic elements. Note to fellow travelers: Despite what you may read in the in-flight magazine, Iceland is in fact freezing in the winter.
