It's a year today that Twenty One Pilots dropped the video for 'Jumpsuit' and kickstarted the 'Trench' era. The 365 days that followed have been nothing short of a whirlwind, and a LOT has happened. So here is everything that the band have achieved in that time in one bitesize chunk for you.
RELEASED THE ‘JUMPSUIT’ VIDEO
This is where it all started. The ‘Trench’ era kicked off with not just a bang, but with a car catching fire. After a year of silence, more questions were posed than answered as Tyler was pursued by a hooded figure on a horse, and then was showered with yellow petals. This was our first glimpse of ‘Trench’ and it was more beautiful than we could have imagined.
PLAYED THEIR FIRST SHOW OF THE ERA IN LONDON
Playing their first show since the ‘Blurryface’ swansong that was Tour De Columbus in June of 2017, Pilots turned London’s Brixton Academy into a sea of yellow. From Tyler standing on top of the burning car at the centre of the stage, to the classic troupes that make the band’s live show such a spectacle, it was truly a fitting introduction.
APPEARED ON THE COVER OF ROCK SOUND
Just how beautiful are these?
SCREENED THEIR MUSIC VIDEOS IN CINEMAS
If you went to see Venom in your local cinema, you would have been treated to the videos for ‘Jumpsuit’, ‘Nico And The Niners’ and ‘Levitate’ played in order. It was an amazing and unique way to introduce the band's world to a new and unsuspecting audience. Give us some of that popcorn.
PERFORMED AT THE AMERICAN MUSIC AWARDS
“Bring our full stage production and some absolutely huge visuals to play an awards ceremony? No problem.”
This was the band’s first TV appearance in over a year, and also only the second performance of the whole ‘Trench’ era after their show in London.
SCORED THEIR HIGHEST EVER CHART POSITION IN THE UK
After reaching #5 in the UK on ‘Blurryface’, ‘Trench’ went a step further and entered the UK charts at #2.
PLAYED THE RADIO 1 LIVE LOUNGE
Tyler and his piano is all it took to send shivers up the spine in this live lounge session. With heart-wrenching versions of ‘My Blood’, Ride’ and ‘Neon Gravestones’ and a beautiful cover of Damien Rice’s ‘9 Crimes’, this was as special as it gets.
SCORED A GRAMMY NOMINATION
After accepting their award for ‘Best pop duo/group’ in their pants back in 2017, the boys got their second calling to the Grammys with ‘Jumpsuit’ appearing in the ‘Best Rock Song’ category.
WON ALBUM OF THE YEAR AT THE ROCK SOUND AWARDS
Who else could it have been?
Their commemorative cover and poster print is still available HERE.
TOPPED THE RADIO 1 HOTTEST RECORD LIST OF 2018
Beating Arctic Monkeys, Years & Years and The 1975, ‘Jumpsuit’ took the top spot on Annie Mac’s Hottest Record over on Radio 1.
LAUNCHED A ‘TRENCH’ IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCE
Adding even more layers to the world that they have created, this let people navigate their way through ‘Trench’ at their own pace. Soundtracked by the album, this demonstrated even more how far the band’s vision stretched.

SOLD OUT A UK TOUR, INCLUDING 3 NIGHTS AT WEMBLEY ARENA
3 Wembleys is no easy feat, yet Pilots made it look child’s play.
INVENTED THE QUIET GAME
It’s quite simple really. The clock starts and then stops the minute a crowd makes a noise. The game was played at every one of the band’s European tour dates and the winners with a total of 5.21 seconds were Paris. Well done Paris.

INTRODUCED THE WORLD TO NED
Little did we know that when the video for ‘Chlorine’ was released that we would be meeting an absolute phenomenon. Described by Tyler as representing “this idea of creativity and trying to take care of it and trying to please it, or appease it”, Ned has taken the clique by storm.
NOMINATED FOR A KID’S CHOICE AWARD
They were up for Favourite Music Group by the way.
WON AN IHEART RADIO AWARD
Album Of The Year. Official.
SAW ‘STRESSED OUT’ PASS 1 BILLION STREAMS ON SPOTIFY
The ‘Blurryface’ era continues to thrive even now.
NOMINATED FOR A BILLBOARD MUSIC AWARD
Another award ceremony, another nomination. This time it was for Top Rock Album.

In just over eight months as well. An absolutely monolithic achievement.

The accolades keep on rolling in with each song passing 500,000 sales each.
OPENED NED'S BAYOU
A pop-up shop dedicated entirely to Ned in the heart of Columbus? Yeah, Pilots did that. From shirts to bags all the way through to a Ned Funko doll, it was all here.
Missed out on your trip to 'Ned's Bayou'? Don't worry, we went to check out everything inside Twenty One Pilots' pop-up store - including that Ned funko pop doll! pic.twitter.com/eEPW9lvEeg— Rock Sound (@rocksound) July 2, 2019
INTRODUCED THE ‘LOCATION SESSIONS’
Taking the songs of ‘Trench’ and reworking them into beautiful new compositions, ‘The Location Sessions’ is the next step in the vibrant journey that Pilots have taken us on over the last year. Long may it continue.
It's been a massive 12 months. Here's to so many more.
