We love him. You love him. This is everything Otto Wood.
In the first of a brand new feature on the Rock Sound Podcast, 'Always The Quiet Ones' - where we shine the spotlight on members of bands who don't always get it - we spoke to Waterparks drummer Otto Wood to find out everything about him.
Here's some of the things we learned...
HE WAS INSPIRED TO START DRUMMING BY THE ROBOTIC DRUMMER AT CHUCK E CHEESE
"I think they've retired now because they've had such a long career, but there was an animatronic band. The pizza chef, I think his name was Pasquale, was the drummer and I remember being fixated on him, just watching this animatronic drummer being like, 'WOAHHHHH'."
MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE INSPIRED HIM TO JOIN A BAND
"Once I hit my teen years... The first recommended band I got [on Yahoo! Music] was My Chemical Romance and my life has never been the same again. [Before that] my favourite band was Rush!"
HE ISN'T ON SOCIAL MEDIA BECAUSE...
"I try to stay off the internet because it's terrifying and I'm out of touch, but I did make a Myspace account!"
OTTO THOUGHT AWSTEN WAS SUPER WEIRD WHEN THEY FIRST MET...
"We hit it off really well but I was like, 'This guy's weird as hell!'
"I don't know if he wants this disclosed or not, but he's pretty shameless so I'm just going to go for it! [At the try-out for our old band], he comes up the stairs and I'm sat behind the drum kit ready to play, I don't think it was summer... but he walks in wearing a bathing suit!
"I could notice from across the room - because homeboy's Greek, so he's supposed to have a fair amount of hair on him - he's got hairy legs, but one of his legs is like, 'Alright, natural hair length' and the other one's clean shaven - just shiny, pasty white leg..."
AND IT DOESN'T END THERE...
"And afterwards, to seal the deal, this is how I knew it was going to be the beginning of a beautiful relationship, he was like, 'Let's go to Chipotle' - I love that!
"And then he drove me back and I didn't realise at the time but he's blind as a bat, or was! It's night time, he's driving, he can't see and he's directionally challenged, I don't know any of this, I've just met him and it's not raining outside at all... and he turns on the windshield wipers. He just keeps driving. I was like, 'This is pretty strange but I think it can work!'"
HE WAS READY TO DRAG THE FIRST WATERPARKS EP
"Awsten made the first Waterparks EP ['Airplane Conversations'] and I thought it was, like, a braggadocious thing! I was working full time and none of the bands I was in [before Waterparks] were lasting, he sent it to me and said, 'Hey, I made these songs, I want to see what you think'.
"I pulled out a pen and paper and was ready to write a bunch of critiques, I was like, 'Alright, I'm going to rake this through the mud... and send it back!' But then I listened to it and was like, 'Oh shit... It's really good!'
HIM AND GEOFF BONDED OVER THEIR WORK ETHIC
"Geoff's a sweetheart, that was my first impression of him and still is... for the most part!
"It took a little while because I already had that established comfortability and familiarity with Awsten... and then it was like, 'Huh, new guy - alright, let's see what he's all about!'. But we became friends pretty quickly.
"We found a lot to yak about and relate to because we were both working stiffs at the time, we were both waking up at four in the morning every day and then working 12 hour days and then getting together at practice after that, which was fun for me because I was doing a physical job!"
AND A FLUSTERED GEOFF DIDN'T REALISE HE MET MIKEY WAY
"I won't ever forget this.
"Mikey walked into the studio to record bass on 'Cluster'... Geoff was all flustered in the other room trying to sort out flights and was visibly 'Ughhh'. He comes in and Mikey, with a nice smile, says 'Hey, I'm Mikey, nice to meet you' and Geoff not even looking said 'Hey, I'm Geoff, nice to meet you' and sits down on the couch.
"I'm just looking at him with a grin on my face because I knew that it hadn't registered with him yet, waiting for it to, and it was like a countdown visibly over his head... I see him lift his head up and his mouth drops, his eyes get wide and he's like, 'Ooooooh Mikey Way!'"
HE MET PETE WENTZ BEFORE THE REST OF THE BAND... AND THEY DIDN'T BELIEVE HIM
"Pete was in the control room [while we were recording 'Double Dare'] and talking to our producer... I opened the door and was like, 'Ohhh, shit!'
"After he walked out I immediately texted the guys saying, 'Yeah, just met Pete Wentz' with a smug face emoji. And then Awsten didn't believe me and said I was full of shit!
"I heard our producer's phone buzz and it was Awsten texting her to try and confirm he was in there!"
HE'S TOYED WITH SHOWING HIS OLD WORKMATES HIS ROCK SOUND COVER
"I haven't done it, that would be such an asshole thing!
"Realistically, I have toyed with the idea, I thought it would nice in like a 'Ahh revenge!' kind of way, come back to work and slam a magazine that happens to have my face on one third of it on my manager's desk who was always a weiner to me! Have a Matt Damon moment, like, 'How about them apples!'
"But I haven't done it. Old friends have reached out to me though and I'm like, 'Wow, that's really neat.'"
