Sum 41's Deryck Whibley dishes out some Life Lessons in this month's magazine. Here's a taste.
THERE’S MORE TO LIFE THAN GETTING WASTED “When I broke my life down, drinking was not that high of a priority. Sure, it was great fun, but in a list of priorities it doesn’t make the top ten.
"I don’t feel like [quitting has] been a battle for me yet, it has been very simple. They said, ‘This is bad for you, and if you continue this way you’re going to die,’ so okay, I’ll stop doing that, I’ll move on. I guess the biggest surprise is that I discovered that life is actually more enjoyable without drinking.
"There are other things that I find exciting in life; just living and doing everything I do on a daily basis is gratifying and satisfying. I used to think, ‘Man, it would be so fucking boring if I didn’t drink, what the hell would I do?’ But I’m having a blast.
"It doesn’t feel like it’s a battle because every day is great, sure there are shitty things about each day and things that get me down, but I come back pretty quick, I don’t get bummed out easily.”
BEING IN A BAND IS MORE EXCITING THAN ANYTHING ELSE “In my life, even when I was drinking, there wasn’t a lot of spare time. I was doing most of my drinking while I was doing the same things I’m doing now, which is mainly music, work and travel.
"Doing what I do with Sum 41 was always accompanied with alcohol, but now it’s not, so my life is still the same, I’m just more present for it all. I can take everything in and enjoy it for what it is, not because I’m buzzed and having a few drinks. What I do is such a naturally fulfilling thing, my life is already great.
"I used to think my life was so exciting because I was always partying, but it’s not. You’re already in a naturally high lifestyle, you’re performing every night, you’re doing all these great things – you’re living the dream.”
