One OK Rock's Taka Moriuchi is part of Rock Sound's list of the most influential people in our scene this month.
Below, you can read part of Taka's interview in the magazine, where he discusses what inspired him to start a band, what it's like being admired and more.
WHO FIRST INSPIRED YOU TO BE IN A BAND? “I loved Linkin Park when I was growing up. When I first heard their music it was really shocking – it still is! I feel like they inspired our band to want to do our own thing. I feel like I’m a normal guy, I don’t aspire to be a rock star.”
SO WHAT’S IT LIKE BEING CONSIDERED A ROCK STAR? “I’m actually a super normal person when I get off stage, so it’s a little weird for me, but I’m happy about it.”
WHAT MOTIVATES YOU TO CREATE? “Just the love of music! My father and my mother [Japenese popstars Masako Mori and Shinichi Mori] are musicians too, so it’s a very natural thing for me.”
WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO PEOPLE WHO LOOK UP TO YOU? “I always say never give up. We never give up. That’s my motto.”
DO YOU HAVE ANY STORIES OF HOW YOU’VE AFFECTED FANS? “I hear stories sometimes at meet and greets from fans. I’m really happy to hear that when I’m doing music, it affects people in other countries, not just Japan.
"Some fans show me ONE OK ROCK tattoos. The first time I saw that it was a little shocking. I was like, ‘Oh my god, that’s… wow!’ But I’m getting used to it now.”
THAT PROVES THAT EVEN THOUGH YOU’VE NEVER MET, YOU CAN REACH EVERYONE WORLDWIDE WITH MUSIC… “This is our dream. When I first started this band I was singing mostly Japanese, but now it’s getting crossed with English more, which is cool.”
