Miss May I have explained why the 'metalcore' tag has never bothered them in a new interview, shared exclusively with Rock Sound. In fact, they've embraced it.
"We got into As I Lay Dying, Unearth... that was metalcore. And we were like, 'That's what we want to do,'" says frontman Levi Benton.
"I think it's great that we stuck to it through all of these albums, because we have a lot of friends that went on the new spin-off genres or tried to start a new genre.
"We're just like, 'When we started this, we wanted to be metalcore. We're gonna be the best metalcore band we can be."
Bassist / vocalist Ryan Neff adds: "We defined the band as this even when we were locals."
"It's cool that we personally identify with the genre that we're in. I do think maybe sometimes if people get too in depth with the genres it can be annoying and it can be tedious for people to try to keep up with, but that's never really been an interest of ours."
