Get inside 'Night People' with You Me At Six's Josh Franceschi.
WHAT WAS THE RECORDING PROCESS LIKE?
Says Josh Franceschi [vocals]: "We went to [Black Bird Studios in] Nashville earlier this year when we had six to eight songs to record, but halfway through we decided to go back to England to write more. That was almost like a first session, and we used the buzz of that to carry on, which was a really healthy way of recording.
"Jaquire [King, producer] really wanted to do a rock record, which he hadn’t done since ‘Only By The Night’ [2008, Kings Of Leon] and his attitude was very much, ‘I can’t have you make a record with me unless it’s your best record, and I want it to be the best rock record I’ve made.’ He helped me do some soul searching too, as there were lots of missing pieces..."
CAN YOU ELABORATE ON THOSE MISSING PIECES? "This is the most I’ve ever written, musically, for a record. I didn’t write anything on [2014’s] ‘Cavalier Youth’ but I wrote a lot for this because I didn’t want to have any regrets. I knew I’d achieved X, Y and Z with You Me At Six, but I don’t want us to be a nostalgia act. I don’t want to be in my mid-to-late-twenties playing songs from when I was 16. I don’t want to be known as a band who’ve had their moment.
"My fiancé helped – she has eclectic music taste and encouraged me in that respect. If you want to move forward you have to look back as well, so I fell in love with bands like Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin. She got me to take myself off social media too, to remove all distractions. She said, ‘Go be your own band, go do what you want to do’ and you can’t do that if you’re looking at the rat race. That was a big moment for me, because I want this band to win Ivor Novello awards, Brit Awards and Grammys. I don’t know how feasible that is if we don’t push ourselves. And my confidence was completely gone before that.
"Jaquire helped, too. He said, ‘I have to make this record with you,’ and this is a guy who has won Grammys for Kings Of Leon and James Bay telling me we were about to make an important record, that we were going to make history together. That really resonated."
