New YearsDay's Ash Costello is this month's list of the most influential, inspirational people in our scene - The Rock Sound 50.
Inside the magazine, Ash talks about influence, sexual abuse in music and never, ever giving up.
Here's a taste of her interview...
YOU’VE RECENTLY BECOME SOMETHING OF AN ICON IN ALTERNATIVE CULTURE. HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THAT? “Honestly? I saw myself as an icon even before New Years Day.
"In school I felt like a rock star, I was just born with that mentality. Back then people would look at what I was wearing and copy it, and I was already thinking big.
"I remember watching a wave of darker bands coming through – everyone from AFI to My Chemical Romance – and wanting to be a part of it, but I missed out. It feels amazing to know that with my band, I’m inspiring other people in the same way. Now [AFI frontman] Davey Havok is on board, and Alice Cooper has called us the future of metal!”
WHAT DO YOU STAND FOR AT THIS POINT? “I’ve always honoured my obsessions, and had the self-belief to look however the hell I want to. That’s something I want to encourage in my fans, because I know how tough it can be – especially when you’re a teenager and under pressure to act like someone else.
"Some people make their name overnight – for me it’s taken years – but if you trust that you’re on the right path, that attitude will pay off.”
