The bad bits: LostAlone, Canterbury and Hostage Calm all announced they were splitting up. The good bits: TWO new Bring Me The Horizon songs landed and Mark Hoppus won at the internet (again).

In the new issue of Rock Sound, we relive the last 12 months in vivid detail with a little help from our friends in Bring Me The HorizonYou Me At SixGerard Way, Lower Than AtlantisArchitects5 Seconds Of SummerSlipknotOf Mice & MenMallory KnoxLinkin ParkNeck Deep and Suicide Silence. But we couldn't fit EVERYTHING in the mag. A lot happened in October, so let's start with the bad bits...

CANTERBURY SPLIT UP, WE ALL DO A CRY
After nine years together, three great albums and a whoooooole bunch of shows, home counties rockers Canterbury announced their decision to split up in October. We were devastated, but you've got to hand it to them for going out on a high.

It's been an unforgettable journey since the very beginning, and although it might not have not got us to where we wanted to be, we have the satisfaction of knowing we did everything we could, the way that WE wanted to, with the utmost integrity, and the music will endure.

LOSTALONE SPLIT UP, WE DO ANOTHER CRY
October really was a shitting shitter of a shit month for bands kicking the bucket. Only a week or so after Canterbury's announcement, Derby rockers LostAlone also called it a day.

"This is not something that we wanted to happen, and not a decision we took lightly but unfortunately for us events have transpired that make it impossible right now for us to continue the band we love," they said in their exit statement.

HOSTAGE CALM SPLIT UP. SERIOUSLY, OCTOBER. STOP IT.
Meanwhile in America, Connecticut punks Hostage Calm also announced their immediate demise. This one took us a while to work out if they were being serious or not (they did just release an album called 'Die On Stage', after all). It turns out they were.

"Hostage Calm has broken up. It's too soon, it's too young, and it hurts too much.

All planned shows are canceled. We are still figuring out if and when there will be any final shows.

I want to personally thank every one of you who supported us over the years. You shared so much more with us than you'll ever know. From our music to our politics, you helped make a bunch of Wallingford kids' foolish dreams a reality. It was the great privilege of our young lives.

To all of you who've connected with us, who've grown with us, who've loved, changed, cried, lived with us - and to all of you who will yet - Just know that we loved what we did, and we could never have done it alone. "I've been a hero, and I've been a fool. And all of it for you."

Yours Forever,
Hostage Calm"

PANIC! AT THE DISCO RELEASE AN APP, INFURIATE EVERYONE
It might be near-impossible to get past level 28, but the Panic! In Vegas app had a point, too. All proceeds made are being donated to the Human Rights Campaign, who lobby for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality. And that's a Very Good Thing.

JARROD ALONGE POKES FUN AT YOUR FAVOURITE GENRES
To help him along with the Indiegogo funding for his first proper spoof album, we teamed up with YouTuber Jarrod Alonge back in October for a four-part video series. The Rock Sound Artist Profiles saw Jarrod spoofing djent, tumblrcore, deathcore and crunkcore... with totally hilarious results. Watch all four of 'em in the playlist below (and tell us if you want to see more of this sort of thing!)

BMTH UNLEASH 'DROWN', TRANSFORM MAT NICHOLS INTO A WEREWOLF...
As if we really need to tell you about this one, right? Bring Me The Horizon dropped surprise new single 'Drown' in October, and the video saw drummer Matt Nicholls turning into a werewolf for some reason. Two months later and you cannot MOVE for hearing the track on daytime radio, and the video is one of our favourites of the year by far.

...THEN GO TURBO-RAP-DUBSTEPCORE WITH 'DON'T LOOK DOWN'
A few weeks after the 'Drown' release, we got wind that BMTH would be rescoring a scene from the movie Drive for Radio 1's Drive: Recored project. They teamed up with Foreign Beggars rapper Orifice Vulgatron and crafted 'Don't Look Down'.

The thing was, though, quite a few BMTH fans were bemused by this apparently 'new' sound. By way of explanation, the band offered this:

"We appreciate the level of passion both good and bad for DLD. We are really proud of what we created, but at the same time, we understand peoples confusion and panic after hearing the track. We were approached by radio one to score a piece of music for a rescore of the movie Drive. Now if you've seen Drive i’m sure you will agree neither anything from our previous albums, nor drown would of fit very well with the vibe of that particular movie, so we decided to create a piece of music that did justice to the amazing scene we was given. we took the opportunity to make something completely different, to do something completely different, something that we wouldn't usually do- although I feel that doesn’t really make sense anymore, because we never do the same thing 2x. We experiment, we change it up, We take risks because we don't want to stay the same and we want to breathe life into this lacklustre genre, and we want to keep you guessing whats coming next. Big up Orifice Vulgatron of Foreign Beggars for collaborating on the track, And once again, if you can tune into BBC 3 tonight at 10 and watch the whole movie, its an amazing project, and we think we smashed our part, and hope you guys feel the same once you've seen it. Peace, BMTH"

MOOSE BLOOD RELEASE DEBUT ALBUM, WE DON'T SHUT UP ABOUT IT.
Here's the thing: Moose Blood really are excellent. We've been saying this for ages. When we first heard 'I'll Keep You In Mind, From Time Time', we knew immediately that it was going to nudge its way into our Albums Of The Year list, and back in release week, we teamed up with the band to stream the whole thing. If you've somehow not given it a spin yet...

SET IT OFF REVEAL RIDICULOUS NEW ALBUM 'DUALITY'
Speaking of BRILLIANT albums that made their way into our Albums Of The Year list, October saw Set It Off release their second album, 'Duality'. Over-the-top, pompous and catchy as fuck, it's like Panic! At The Disco and post-hiatus Fall Out Boy had one shimmering, jazz hands-ing baby.

Introducing the album, Set It Off vocalist Cody Carson told us at the time: "Duality is easily the most honest record Set It Off has released to date. Over the past couple of years, I've come to a huge realization. We all have two sides, we all have that side that we hide, we all have flaws, and we are all human, but some of us hide behind a mask with either malicious intent or simply out of the plain and powerful fear of judgement. In these songs, I show you how I feel about these issues and I bare my true self to you. I'd rather everyone know who I am for who I am. Welcome to Duality."

AS IT IS MAKE HISTORY AND SIGN TO FEARLESS RECORDS
The beginnings of something very special were made back in October, as Fearless Records signed their first ever UK act in Brighton pop-punks As It Is. Following the announcement, the band jetted off to America to record their debut album with James Paul Wisner (Paramore, Underøath) and we should see the fruits of their labours surface in the early part of next year.

SEAWAY GO TOTALLY BOYBAND
Speaking of pop-punk, Canadian quintet Seaway made the headlines in October with their promo video for 'Your Best Friend'. Why? Because the whole thing is one BRILLIANT '90s boyband parody, complete with Adidas tracksuits and synchronised dance moves.

If there's been a better music video this year, we're yet to see it.

BILLIE JOE ARMSTRONG RESURFACES (SORT OF)

It's been a quiet year for Green Day and Billie Joe Armstrong, but that doesn't mean the man's been sitting on his arse at home doing nothing. A little-known UK act called Matt Grocott & The Shrives released their new single in October and it just so happened to have been recorded by BJA himself. Oh, and Billie Joe and his son Joey both appear on the track, playing bass and drums respectively.

SOME GUY ASKS THE INTERNET TO HELP HIM HIGH FIVE MARK HOPPUS. MARK HOPPUS AGREES.
Reddit user NoSoup69 made us all sit up and pay attention in October, as he took to the website to post the following simple yet out-of-the-ordinary request.

"As I grow older, I realize that there are a number of things that I would like to do before I die. A bucket list, if you will.

I'm nearing my 31st birthday and have always wanted to meet (even if briefly) the frontman for my favorite band. Mark Hoppus: that's you. I know you have a show in a few days in Vegas - if you are willing to give me a high five (whenever is convenient for you) I'll drop everything and fly out there. Sounds a bit silly, I know - but what the hell. 30 seconds of your time will probably be the highlight of my life (just don't tell my wife or child that) and make me feel young again.

I would also settle for a fist bump.

Let me know."

A few days, a couple of flights and a whole lot of people hounding Mr Hoppus on the old social medias later, and a dream was made.

"I know it sounds cliché, but words cannot adequately describe how thankful I am for the experience," he posted following the encounter. "Mark, you're a pretty rad guy."

FIGHTSTAR RETURN!!!!1111
We had weeks of teasing and clue-dropping, but it wasn't until mid-October that Fightstar finally confirmed that a) they're a band again, b) they're going to play some shows and c) there'll be new music at some point.

“I’ve always felt that we’ve had an amazing fanbase who’ve supported us through everything," Charlie Simpson told us. "Over the past four years while I’ve been concentrating on my solo stuff, I’ve constantly been asked about whether Fightstar would do shows again - whether we’d make some new music - and every time, I’ve said that in time, it’ll happen. But even so, I’m surprised by the sheer outpouring of love! It just shows that our records still resonate with people.”

THE DEFILED PLAY A GIG ON AN ICEBERG. YES, REALLY.
This one made it into the actual newspapers. Staggering. London metallers The Defiled were flown out to the Arctic Circle in October for a gig with a difference.

"Braving freezing temperatures and fast flowing ice, the group performed the special set to a host of locals from the nearby town of Kulusuk, who ventured out to the ice field to watch this once-in-a-lifetime experience from an array of fishing boats and leisure craft."
