2014 Laid Bare: January Was The Month That…

Andy Ritchie

As 2014 rolled into view, we didn't have a clue what the months ahead would hold. In the first of our 2014: Laid Bare review features, we cast our memories back to January and relive ALL the big news stories you forgot about.

In the new issue of Rock Sound, we relive the last 12 months in vivid detail, with a little help from our friends in Bring Me The Horizon, You Me At Six, Gerard Way, Lower Than Atlantis, Architects, 5 Seconds Of Summer, Slipknot, Of Mice & Men, Mallory Knox, Linkin Park, Neck Deep and Suicide Silence. But we couldn't fit EVERYTHING in the mag. So as a reminder of what happened way back when in January, here's a little refresher...

JOEY JORDISON: I'M KNOT IN SLIPKNOT ANYMORE
Barely a day of 2014 had gone by before things started stirring in camp Slipknot. On January 02, ex-drummer Joey Jordison took to the social medias to tell the world he didn't leave the band of his own accord. "I would like to start the New Year by addressing the recent rumors and speculation regarding my departure from Slipknot," Joey began. "I want to make it very clear that I DID NOT QUIT SLIPKNOT. This band has been my life for the last 18 years, and I would never abandon it, or my fans. This news has shocked and blindsided me as much as it has all of you. While there is much I would like to say, I must remain silent to further details at this time. I would like to thank you all for your unwavering love and support, and wish everyone a very happy and healthy New Year."

HAYLEY WILLIAMS STAYS THE NIGHT, TAKES OVER THE CHARTS
We hadn't heard the name Zedd much before 2014, but that all changed when the Russian-German producer teamed up with Paramore's Hayley Williams for THAT banger 'Stay The Night'. It hit Number Two in the UK charts, and provided club dancefloors the world over with a new dance-rock staple.

MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE ANNOUNCE THE END. THE PROPER, PROPER END.
Since their surprise split last year, My Chemical Romance fans never really got a proper chance to say goodbye or have any real closure. That all changed in January, as they announced their release in the form of the retrospective 'May Death Never Stop You'. “The title is fitting," the band said in a statement, "because as sad as it was to say goodbye to the band, we look at this collection as a celebration of our best songs, and hope the memory of them continues to bring joy to you all as they have for us. We hope you take the journey with us into MCR's past, and enjoy the small taste of what might have been.”

OF MICE & MEN RESTORE THE FORCE WITH CRUSHING NEW ALBUM
After a reshuffle that saw Aaron 'Powerlungs' Pauley brought into the fold as their new clean vocalist / bassist, Of Mice & Men launched their attack on 2014 with the crushing 'Restoring Force'. Sitting somewhere between the nu metal of the early '00s and the metalcore sound of today, it was and still is an essential listen for heavy music fans. Don't believe us? If you somehow haven't heard it yet...

WE ARE THE IN CROWD GET WEIRD. REAL WEIRD.
On the lighter side of the rock spectrum, New York state pop-punkers We Are The In Crowd returned in January with their second album 'Weird Kids'. It was pure pop-rock gold, and ensured they'd spend the next 12 months playing to bigger and louder crowds by the day.

KEITH BUCKLEY DOES A JASON AALON AND JUMPS ON A LETLIVE. TRACK (WITH SEXY RESULTS)
We learned at the end of 2013 that letlive. would be re-working a bunch of their tracks with guest vocalists for an EP. The full thing never surfaced, but they at least released this thunderous rendition of '27 Club' with Every Time I Die's Keith Buckley freestyling over the middle eight.

BRING ME THE HORIZON ANNOUNCE WEMBLEY SHOW, METAL STICKS TWO FINGERS UP TO THE MAINSTREAM
A metal band playing one of the biggest arenas in the country? RIDICULOUS, right? Wrong. We'll see how that pans out in a few days' time, but when the news broke back in January, we knew we'd be spending the next 12 months pissing our pants waiting for December 05 to roll around.

INTERNET DATING GETS OUT OF CONTROL
We're not sure why this was a thing, but American hip-hop duo Insane Clown Posse launched their own, err, dating site back in January for all the lonely Juggalos out there. Was it relevant to anything? Not really. Did we spend an afternoon watching this video over and over again anyway? You bet your sweet face paints we did.

RONNIE GOES RAP, INTERNET GETS SUPER CONFUSED
Not long after they'd released their (ludicrous) second album 'Fashionably Late', Falling In Reverse's Ronnie Radke started dropping hints that he was working on a rap album. 'Stupid Boy' was the first cut we heard from it back in January, and the last time we checked, nobody really knows what to do with it.

...WHILE ESCAPE THE FATE + FALLING IN REVERSE BURY THE HATCHET IN NEW YORK
The long-running feud between two of metalcore's biggest names finally came to a conclusion earlier this year, when Escape The Fate and Falling In Reverse hit the road together in the US for their Bury The Hatchet Tour. Things have been a little unsettled since (especially in the ETF camp), but we hopped over the pond to witness history in the making as the tour rolled into New York.

NECK DEEP DESTROY LONDON'S BARFLY, BEN BARLOW CAN'T EVEN HANDLE IT RN
As we look forward to 2015, we know for a fact that Neck Deep will be impossible to get away from next year. It's hard to believe they were only playing the Barfly back in January, and we were on hand to witness all the carnage (and the crowdsurfing) unfold.

YOU ME AT SIX TOP THE ALBUM CHARTS WITH 'CAVALIER YOUTH'....

January brought with it a new You Me At Six album, and while we all had our fingers crossed, even they didn't expect to be celebrating their first ever UK Number One album by the time February came into view. After shifting a metric shit-tonne of copies in its first week, 'Cavalier Youth' became the album that took them to the top (and back to the cover of Rock Sound, too).
