Where most heavy bands plough a good line in angst, Verse (like Defeater and Burn Down Rome to name but two) deal in sheer agony. It is so purely articulated here that they can afford to push the boundaries of progressive hardcore; from ultra-melodic post-rock guitars to rap-infused aggression that recalls Downset and early Vision Of Disorder, without ever feeling forced or out of place. One can only hope that whatever broke the band up in 2009 is now sufficiently resolved and that Verse can continue to pump out such an engrossing din, but in the meantime this record will reward repeat spins generously.
There's been some actual news this week. The Movielifereformed, Fightstarreturned from hiatus, and then there was Emoji Artworks. But sadly, today is our last #notthenews round-up of 2014. Try to hold back those tears while we recap all of this week's nonsense.
