Caliban are thinking outside the box on ‘Ghost Empire’, they just aren’t doing it enough. On the surface, their ninth full-length is the same worn-out melodic metalcore the German veterans have been turning out for over 15 years. But deeper there are clever, unexpected twists of context and progression (the latter half of opener ‘King’ for one) which make ‘Ghost Empire’ significantly more palatable. Although the few now obligatory djent-influenced licks (‘Chaos – Creation’) don’t count towards the total. If more was made of the aforementioned sidesteps, ‘Ghost Empire’ might have been a better record. As it is, it leaves little impression.
