William Control - Noir

Rating: 7

“What’s a pound of flesh…drugged up on London’s streets?” Asks Shylock (sorry WiL) in ‘All Due Restraint’ without the promise of a humorous punch line. Further aiding (get it) William’s status as a macabre storyteller, there’s a synthetic pulse beating out across ‘Noir’ creating a world of pain. ‘Soliloquy’ reigns supreme as an acoustic ballad showcasing a modest and intimate Leonard Cohen like song of real beauty, muting the portentousness of layered keyboards and synthesisers elsewhere. When William decides to cover Elvis’ ‘Can’t Help Falling In Love’ however there’s a distorted cluttering of acoustic overload amidst the electronica infused tracks obscuring the better moments.
