Everything's fine with this album until halfway through the third track. Openers 'Either Way' and 'You Are My Face' are maybe a little too smooth for their own good, the band sound like they're playing with their hands in their pockets, but they have a nice Sunday afternoon feel. Then, on 'Impossible Germany', there's a guitar solo that's so smug you can almost see the guitarist making that horrible sex-face that musos pull when they feel they've done a particularly impressive 'lick'. The solo's back, only quicker, on 'Side With The Seeds' and even more nauseating on stinky blues-jam 'Hate It Here', and suddenly we're far from the vaguely cool territory where Wilco used to live and stuck in the middle of the road with Counting Crows. Gross.
