What Now - Fake Control

Rating: 4

Musically What Now sweep at a vision of wide open space, and they’re not bad in their U2 Edge like riffs, but vocally it’s just not there. ‘Toy Soldiers’ leads into five tracks constructed with a good anthem driven backbone but without enough flesh to actually deliver the goods. It’s the vocals that are the problem as Ryan Morris sounds bored in his execution, and worse, doesn’t enunciate properly which is bloody exasperating. Meanwhile backing vocalist / bassist Tyron Layley does the ‘woahs’ while adding very little to the songs except a sense of irritation as his vocals jar with Ryan’s, leaving a half-hearted impression.
