Viva Machine - ‘Viva Machine’

Rating: 7

Formerly Ipsofacto, this Welsh outfit changed their name and sound in 06, added a spot of synth in 08 and now sound a bit like The Automatic. But are they too late to the party? Opener ‘Robot Bodyrox’ would suggest so, with its lumpen chorus, and rather too many of these songs give away their secrets within the first minute before plodding on for another three. But Viva Machine are no one-trick ponies, and when they tether some brute force to more complicated structures – see ‘Earthquakers and Loveshakers’ and ‘A Futuristic Dracula’ for details – they sound hugely talented and chart-bound.
