Valient Thorr - Stranger

Rating: 7

‘Stranger’ starts off surprisingly angry and disjointed with ‘Gillionaire’; an odd note for a band so rocking and jovial. They immediately turn the corner with ‘Sleeper Awakes’ and ‘Disappear’, both piston pushers shoehorning Minor Threat into Zeke’s southern speed punk with blazing Motown soul / R&B lurking in the background. The premise may be ridiculously half-hearted – a band from Venus whose planetary uniform looks exactly like your average beard and denim rock dude – and the weakest point may be their frontman, Valient Himself, who doesn’t so much sing as talk loudly and rapidly, but if you need a roadtrip or raging kegger soundtrack, you could do little better.
