Union Sound Set - Start / Stop

Rating: 7

Union Sound Set’s Edd Simpson probably needed a bit of misfortune in his life. After all, coming from a wealthy background and a loving family, which includes at least two notable British rock stars, is not exactly the fetid earth that most great music springs from. Luckily the knocks that Edd received in his old band, Prego, have given ‘Start / Stop’ a real punch. The best tracks, such as ‘My Current State’ and ‘Answers’, shimmer and shudder with repressed emotion, alongside the sheets of carefully crafted guitar noise. Despite the influences of American rock it’s all very English, a little buttoned-up and earnest, but with an enormous heart.
