It’s a mark of
The Xcerts’ ascension from scrappy pop-rockers to serious, accomplished tunesmiths that they can take the bare-bones template for a stop-gap EP (two originals, one cover, one album track and an ‘alternative version’ of another song) and turn it into something quite delightful. How? Because their reading of
Elliott Smith’s ‘Say Yes’ keeps the vulnerability of the original but adds a necessary roughness and ‘Tear Me Down’ and ‘Let’s Run’ are good enough that they could have easily fitted on the excellent full-length ‘Scatterbrain’. If they keep getting better, the sky’s the limit.
