The Winchester Club - Negative Liberty

Rating: 7

‘Negative Liberty’ attempts to unearth that perfect balance between quiet and earth-shattering loudness that post-rock so nobly pursues. ‘Fuck You Buddy’ and ‘R. D. Laing’ summon Godspeed in the brooding intensity of their intros (the latter reminiscent of the band‘s ‘East Hastings’). However, cries of plagiarism are premature and misguided. ‘R. D. Laing’, at a whopping 15 minutes, eventually erupts into a cymbal workout before tribal toms display a satisfying weight in the production. ‘The End Of History’ is a non-stop build up while the closing title track winds you back down gently. Very promising if not exactly earth-shattering then.
