If there had been an award or category for Most Gallant Losers in the recent end of decade polls, somewhere near the top would have been
Aereogramme. Three years on from the vastly underrated Scottish rockers’ demise, singer
Craig B and multi-instrumentalist
Iain Cook have reunited for
The Unwinding Hours, which sees them weave lush arrangements and searing guitar noise into another set of wonderfully dynamic songs. He may not be much of a screamer anymore, but
Craig B can still stop you dead with the nakedness of his feelings and it’s this ability that makes their debut such a devastatingly brilliant listen. Almost every stage of an intense relationship can be heard somewhere in ‘The Unwinding Hours’ – from the early pangs of desire weaved into the childlike melodies of ‘Traces’ and the beautifully tender ‘Little One’, right through to the aggrieved breakup monologue of ‘Child’ during which you can almost see the frontman snarling as he sings. As graceful as the album is, it’d take a man far braver than this RS hack to predict that
Craig and
Iain will succeed where
Aereogramme failed. But the early indications suggest that at the very least,
The Unwinding Hours will make their slow defeat sound as wonderfully inspiring as the band that spawned them.
