The Unkindness Of Ravens - I Used To Be So Pretty

Rating: 7

The worst thing that you can say about The Unkindness Of Ravens is that this sort of boygirl, dance-rock, sexual-tensionat-the-mic-stand thing has been done many times before. The Kills come to mind. However, the whisky-and-coke mixture of the voices of Nina Wagner and Ben Raine is at least as powerful and less self-conscious than some of their antecedents. It sounds like they recorded opener ‘‘Til I Get Home’ in an underground car park and the sinister, echoey vibe continues right through to the psychedelic reel of closer ‘Prototype’, with waves of lusty guitar feedback in between. It might be old but it’s far from being out of fashion.
