The Swellers - Ups And Downsizing

Rating: 9

It’s been a while since we’ve had a good old-fashioned punk rock record from the Fueled By Ramen ranks, but fortunately Michigan’s The Swellers are here to change that. ‘Ups And Downsizing’ is a pedal-to-the-metal, full throttle collection of power-chord anthems with a lyrical hook round every corner. From the fantastically punchy opener ‘2009’, it’s a record that smacks of a band born in the heart of a recession, but where the lyrics are frustrated in ‘Welcome Back Riders’ and ‘Feet First’, the melodies are at their most spectacular. Put simply, this is a fist-pumping, lungs bellowing, socially aware juggernaut of an album.
