The Defiled - Grave Times

Rating: 7

Although ‘Grave Times’ threatens to be explosive The Defiled fall short of lighting the fuse. Shopping a nu-flavoured metalcore with djent dips and melodic industrial asides, the London five-piece find the bulk of their success when not playing it safe. The keyboard-based electronic theatrics boast a layer of interest many of The Defiled’s peers don’t possess, although much of that good work is undone by some curious clean vocals elsewhere. And while ‘The Resurrectionists’ is the LP’s most solid effort it doesn’t quite produce a unique or emotionally engaging imprint. If only ‘Grave Times’ could have successfully gauged the formula.
