The Acacia Strain - Wormwood

Rating: 8

If you thought you knew ‘heavy’, then think again! This fifth studio outing from Massachusetts mob The Acacia Strain is about to redefine hefty, as one blast from the album’s opener, ‘Beast’ (which certainly lives up to its moniker), proves. Fucking hell, it’s as if the bottom has fallen out of the world (and considering they’re famous purveyors of the ‘brown note’, the world fallen out your, erm, well, you get the picture). Yes, there may be loads of bands doing the ‘machine gun drumming’ thing, but what sets The Acacia Strain aside is the inventive depth of their muddy melodies, as demonstrated here. Featuring tracks smeared in blood and gristle, mostly referring to monsters of the fi ctional and factual kind, including ‘Ramirez’ (Robert… The Nightstalker), ‘The Impaler’ (Vlad), ‘Jonestown’ (after the Brian Jones cult massacre) and ‘The Hills Have Eyes’, ‘Wormwood’ is the sonic equivalent of those awaiting execution on death row – complete with an air of deadly expectation and songs pumped with a tense energy. With bruising breakdowns and brawny bass under-pinning, ‘Nightman’ is an immense proposition and ‘The Impaler’, with slow, low grooves and riffery so thick it’s clotted like old blood, is one hell of a dirge laden stomp. Rotten to the core. Nice.
