Telegraphs - ‘We Were Ghosts’

Rating: 8

For a band that revels in pop-rock structures, Telegraphs’ debut could have been a limited, restrained affair. Fortunately, ‘We Were Ghosts’ laughs in the face of that foolish concern, threatening to break its edges at every turn. Dave Eringa (Manic Street Preachers) has ramped the volume up, but the real strength is the performance of lead singer Darcy Harrison, whose frenzied, breathy, emotive delivery evokes memories of Frank Turner’s time with Million Dead, elevating the Telegraphs sound from well-trained house pet to furious beast bashing around in a cage. This is an intelligent, feisty debut that lives up to all the band’s early promise.
