Just when it seemed that Katatonia had trumped all opposition in the doom and gloom stakes with the scintillating ‘Night Is The New Day’, Finnish counterparts Swallow The Sun turn up with what may just be the album of their career. Building on the strengths of 07s ‘Hope’ and last year’s promising ‘Plague Of Butterflies’ mini-album, ‘New Moon’ is a relentlessly stunning assortment of evocative tunes seeped in haunting melancholy and noise. There are countless dizzying peaks, but look to ‘Lights On The Lake (Horror Pt. III)’ for the fiercest display of Swallow The Sun's startling versatility; black, death and doom has rarely sounded so beautiful.
