Soul Nidus - Looking Back, Facing Forward

Rating: 7

For ‘Looking Back Facing Forward’ Toronto’s Soul Nidus hired Coldplay’s ‘Yellow’ master engineer Geoff Pesch to take control of production, so it’s no surprise that the album taps into the scope of anthemic rock here. Thankfully that’s all that’s borrowed from Coldplay with vocalist Ehsan Ashrafi hopping between gut-wrenching sing-alongs on ‘Song Of Hope’ and wearily damaged acoustic ballads ‘I’m Sorry’ without any insipid Chris Martin overtones. While there are plenty of pop dissertations here, beneath it lies the band’s knack for melody, thought-provoking songwriting and some short, tight blasts of rock (‘Feel No Pain’). Raw, visceral stadium rock. Sweet.
